『Tambu』は、TOTOの精密なアンサンブルを保ちながら、より低く重いリズムと落ち着いた色彩へと向かった作品だ。派手なヒット曲志向よりも、曲ごとの空気と演奏の細かな呼吸が重視されている。名ドラマー、ジェフ・ポーカロの逝去という悲しみを経て、サイモン・フィリップスを新たなドラマーに迎え、バンドは再び歩みを進めた。 “I Will Remember”“The Turning Point”“Gift of Faith”といった楽曲では、ギター、キーボード、リズム隊が互いの隙間を丁寧に埋め、スティーヴ・ルカサーの歌は強さと陰りの間を行き来している。“Drag Him to the Roof”“The Road Goes On”のような楽曲にも、成熟した演奏の妙味がある。“Slipped Away”“If You Belong to Me”“Time Is the Enemy”“Blackeye”といった楽曲にも、成熟したバンドの深い味わいが表れている。サイモン・フィリップスの卓越したドラミングはバンドに新たなダイナミズムをもたらし、喪失という大きな悲しみを経てなお前進を続けるバンドの、静かで確かな決意が刻まれた一枚だ。職人的な演奏力が静かに、そして確かに光る本作は、悲しみを乗り越えて新たな一歩を刻んだ、成熟期のTOTOの充実作である。

Tambu is a work on which TOTO, while keeping its precise ensemble, headed toward a lower, heavier rhythm and a calmer color. Rather than flashy hit-chasing, the atmosphere of each song and the fine breathing of the playing are emphasized. After the sorrow of the passing of the great drummer Jeff Porcaro, the band welcomed Simon Phillips as its new drummer and moved forward again. On “I Will Remember,” “The Turning Point” and “Gift of Faith,” guitar, keyboards and rhythm section carefully fill each other’s gaps, and Steve Lukather’s singing moves between strength and shadow. Songs like “Drag Him to the Roof” and “The Road Goes On” have a matured playing skill too. Where craftsmanlike playing shines quietly and firmly, it is a full work of mature-period TOTO — one that carved a new step beyond grief.
