『Kingdom of Desire』は、TOTOが洗練されたポップ性を残しながら、ギターの重さと生々しいバンド感を強く前面に出した作品だ。スティーヴ・ルカサーが主要なリード・ヴォーカルを担い、声の熱とギターの表情がアルバムの中心を作り出している。よりハードでオーガニックなサウンドへと踏み込んだ、バンドの新たな一面を示す一枚である。 “Gypsy Train”“Don't Chain My Heart”“Kingdom of Desire”といった楽曲は、複雑な演奏を自然に聴かせつつ、メロディには哀感と力強さが共存している。インストゥルメンタルの“Jake to the Bone”では、バンドの卓越した演奏力が存分に発揮されている。“Never Enough”“2 Hearts”“The Other Side”といった楽曲にも、力強い演奏と叙情が同居している。ボビー・キンボールが脱退しルカサーがヴォーカルの中心を担ったことで、サウンドはより荒々しく直接的になり、バンドの転換期を象徴する一枚となった。本作は、名ドラマー、ジェフ・ポーカロが参加した最後のスタジオ作としても知られており、メンバーの演奏が互いを押し上げる緊張感が濃く刻まれた、特別な意味を持つ一枚である。彼の遺した卓越したグルーヴが、全編に確かに息づいている。

Kingdom of Desire is a work on which TOTO, while keeping its refined pop quality, strongly foregrounded guitar weight and a raw band feel. Steve Lukather takes the main lead vocals, and the heat of his voice and the expression of the guitar form the album’s center. Stepping into a harder, more organic sound, it shows a new side of the band. Songs like “Gypsy Train,” “Don't Chain My Heart” and “Kingdom of Desire” present complex playing naturally while melancholy and strength coexist in the melody. On the instrumental “Jake to the Bone,” the band’s outstanding playing is fully displayed. This record is also known as the last studio album on which the great drummer Jeff Porcaro took part — a record of special meaning, deeply carving the tension of members lifting each other’s playing, with the outstanding groove he left breathing firmly throughout.
