『Mindfields』は、TOTOが高度な演奏力を見せびらかすのではなく、曲の空気を丁寧に整えるために用いた作品だ。しなやかなリズム、色彩豊かなキーボード、複数の声が重なるコーラスが、都会的でありながら温かいサウンドを作り出している。オリジナル・ヴォーカリストのボビー・キンボールが復帰し、バンドは往年の輝きを取り戻している。 “Cruel”“Mysterious Ways”“Mindfields”“Melanie”といった楽曲では、ソウル、ポップ、ロックの感覚が自然に交わり、どの曲にも余裕のあるグルーヴが漂っている。“Mad About You”“After You've Gone”のような楽曲にも、洗練されたメロディ・センスが息づいている。“High Price of Hate”“Caught in the Balance”“Better World”“Spanish Steps”といった楽曲にも、バンドの豊かな音楽性が息づいている。スティーヴ・ルカサーとボビー・キンボールの二人のヴォーカルが楽曲に厚みと多彩さを与えた、オリジナル・メンバー再結集による充実作である。洗練されていながらも人肌の温度を失わない本作は、TOTOらしいバンド・アルバムの魅力を存分に味わえる、充実した一枚である。円熟したメンバーの演奏が、全編で心地よく調和している。

Mindfields is a work on which TOTO used its high playing skill not to show off but to carefully set the songs’ atmosphere. Supple rhythm, colorful keyboards and choruses layering several voices create an urbane yet warm sound. With original vocalist Bobby Kimball back, the band regains its old brilliance. On “Cruel,” “Mysterious Ways,” “Mindfields” and “Melanie,” soul, pop and rock senses meet naturally, and a composed groove drifts through every song. Songs like “Mad About You” and “After You've Gone” breathe a refined melodic sense too. Refined yet never losing a human warmth, it is a full record for fully savoring the appeal of a TOTO-style band album, with the matured members’ playing harmonizing pleasantly throughout.
