『V: The New Mythology Suite』は、神話的な題材を壮大な組曲構成で描いた、SYMPHONY Xのプログレッシヴ・メタルの大作である第5作だ。アトランティスと失われた叡智をめぐる物語を、全13曲が緊密に連なるコンセプト・アルバムとして構築している。ベーシストのマイケル・レポンドが加入した最初の作品であり、モーツァルトやヴェルディ、バッハといったクラシックからの引用も随所に織り込まれている。「5」という数字と五感を主題に据え、2000年にInside Out Musicからリリースされた。 冒頭の“Prelude”から幕を開け、劇的な“Evolution (The Grand Design)”、静謐な“Communion and the Oracle”、そして13分に及ぶ終曲“Rediscovery, Pt. II”へと至る流れは圧巻だ。楽曲の間を「セグエ」と呼ばれる小品がつなぎ、一枚を通じて一つの物語を紡ぎ出している。ラッセル・アレンの歌唱とロメオ、ピネラの超絶技巧が渾然一体となった、バンドの代表作の一つである。トラックスイーストやダンジョンなど複数のスタジオで録音され、緻密に構築されている。

V: The New Mythology Suite is Symphony X's fifth album, a grand progressive-metal work depicting mythological subject matter in a sweeping suite structure. It builds a story of Atlantis and lost wisdom as a concept album in which all thirteen songs tightly link together. It is the first album with bassist Michael Lepond, and citations from classical composers like Mozart, Verdi and Bach are woven throughout. Themed around the number five and the five senses, it was released in 2000 through Inside Out Music. Opening with "Prelude," the flow through the dramatic "Evolution (The Grand Design)," the tranquil "Communion and the Oracle," and on to the 13-minute closer "Rediscovery, Pt. II" is stunning. Short pieces called "segues" connect the songs, weaving a single story across the record. Russell Allen's singing and the virtuosity of Romeo and Pinnella blend into one — one of the band's signature works. Recorded across several studios including Trax East and The Dungeon, it is meticulously constructed.
