The Odyssey

『The Odyssey』は、高度な演奏と壮大な構成で、SYMPHONY Xがプログレッシヴ・メタルのスケールを大きく広げた第6作だ。マイケル・ロメオの自宅スタジオ「ダンジョン」で全編を録音し、彼自身のプロデュースで完成させた最初の一枚でもある。前作までの神話趣味を受け継ぎつつ、よりヘヴィで攻撃的なアプローチへと踏み込んでいる。2002年11月にInside Out Musicからリリースされた本作で、バンドはそれまでで最もヘヴィなサウンドに到達した。 24分に及ぶ表題大曲は、ホメロスの叙事詩『オデュッセイア』を7つの楽章で描いた、バンド屈指の意欲作だ。冒頭の“Inferno (Unleash the Fire)”の激烈な疾走感、『The Divine Wings of Tragedy』の名曲の続編“Accolade II”、そしてポーの短編に着想を得た“King of Terrors”まで、多彩な楽曲が並ぶ。ラッセル・アレンはより荒々しい表情も覗かせ、ロメオの速弾きが全編を牽引する。技巧と物語性を両立させた、力強い一枚である。前作『V』と同じ5人の布陣が続投し、緊密な演奏が全編を貫いている。

The Odyssey is Symphony X's sixth album, on which they greatly widened progressive metal's scale with advanced playing and grand construction. It is also the first record recorded entirely at Michael Romeo's home studio "The Dungeon" and completed under his own production. Carrying over the previous albums' mythological bent while stepping into a heavier, more aggressive approach. Released in November 2002 through Inside Out Music, it saw the band reach their heaviest sound to that point. The 24-minute title epic, depicting Homer's Odyssey across seven movements, is one of the band's most ambitious works. From the fierce drive of the opener "Inferno (Unleash the Fire)" to "Accolade II," a sequel to the classic from The Divine Wings of Tragedy, and "King of Terrors," inspired by a Poe short story, varied songs line up. Russell Allen shows a rawer side, and Romeo's fast playing drives the whole record. Balancing technique and storytelling, it is a powerful album. The same five-man lineup continued from the previous V, and tight playing runs throughout.
