『Episode』は、STRATOVARIUSが高速のツイン・リード、壮麗なキーボード、そして安定したリズム隊を、一つの大きな流れへと見事にまとめ上げた、傑作だ。本作から、鍵盤にイェンス・ヨハンソン、ドラムにヨルグ・マイケルが加入し、バンドの黄金ラインナップが完成。ネオクラシカルな高度な技法は、単に曲を華やかに飾るためだけでなく、あくまでメロディの持つ高揚感を、力強く増幅するために使われている。バンドの方向性が、はっきりと形になった一枚である。 冒頭を飾る名曲“Father Time”の圧倒的な疾走感、そして超高速の“Speed of Light”のスリルまで、疾走曲の爽快さは格別だ。“Will the Sun Rise?”“Eternity”“Season of Change”のような、ストリングスや荘厳な合唱を生かした、エピックで壮大な場面とも、自然に繋がっていく。 疾走感あふれるパワー・メタルの爽快さと、シンフォニックで壮大なドラマ性とを、極めて高い次元で両立させている点に、本作の凄みがある。バンドの、輝かしい黄金期へと直接つながる、その編成と方向性とが、この作品で明確に確立された。北欧メロディック・パワー・メタルの、重要な到達点となった、記念碑的な一枚と言える。

Episode is a masterpiece on which Stratovarius beautifully pulls high-speed twin leads, magnificent keyboards and a steady rhythm section into one large flow. From this album, Jens Johansson joined on keyboards and Jörg Michael on drums, completing the band’s golden lineup. The high neoclassical technique is used not merely to flamboyantly decorate the songs but to powerfully amplify the lift of the melody. A record on which the band’s direction clearly took shape. The briskness of the dashing songs is exceptional, from the overwhelming speed of the classic opener “Father Time” to the thrill of the ultra-fast “Speed of Light.” It connects naturally with epic, grand passages using strings and solemn chorus, as in “Will the Sun Rise?,” “Eternity” and “Season of Change.” Its power lies in uniting, at an extremely high level, the briskness of dashing power metal and symphonic, grand drama. The lineup and direction leading directly to the band’s brilliant golden era were clearly established on this work. A monumental record that became an important peak of Nordic melodic power metal.
