『Elements Pt. 1』は、STRATOVARIUSが速いギター、華麗なキーボード、そして伸びやかな歌を、これまでよりも大規模で、オーケストラ的なアレンジの中へと、大胆に組み込んだ、野心的な第9作だ。二部作として構想された、その壮大なプロジェクトの前編にあたる。長い楽曲の中では、静かで荘厳な導入部から、一気に疾走する劇的な展開までを扱い、バンドのスケール感を、大きく押し広げている。 冒頭を飾る名曲“Eagleheart”のキャッチーな疾走感、壮大な“Soul of a Vagabond”、そして“Fantasia”“Learning to Fly”“Find Your Own Voice”のような曲には、従来の爽快な疾走感を保ちながらも、より深い陰影と、シンフォニックな壮大さとが、豊かに加わっている。合唱やオーケストレーションが、作品に重厚な奥行きを与えている。 従来のパワー・メタルの枠組みを、シンフォニックな要素で大きく拡張してみせた、意欲的な内容が本作の魅力だ。野心的な二部作の、その輝かしい出発点にふさわしい、スケールの大きな一枚である。“Eagleheart”は、バンドの新たな代表曲となった。壮大さと疾走感を両立させた、充実したシンフォニック・パワー・メタル作品と言える。

Elements Pt. 1 is an ambitious ninth album on which Stratovarius boldly incorporates fast guitar, flamboyant keyboards and soaring singing into a larger-scale, orchestral arrangement than before. It is the first half of a grand project conceived as a diptych. Within the long songs, it handles everything from quiet, solemn introductions to dramatic developments that dash all at once, greatly widening the band’s scale. In the catchy speed of the classic opener “Eagleheart,” the grand “Soul of a Vagabond” and cuts like “Fantasia,” “Learning to Fly” and “Find Your Own Voice,” a deeper shading and symphonic grandeur are richly added while keeping the former briskness. Chorus and orchestration give the work weighty depth. Its appeal is ambitious content that greatly expanded the frame of former power metal with symphonic elements. A large-scale record fitting to be the radiant starting point of an ambitious diptych. “Eagleheart” became a new signature song for the band. Uniting grandeur and speed, it is a fulfilling symphonic-power-metal work.
