『Eyewitness』は、ROYAL HUNTが、重厚で緻密なキーボード、硬いギター、そして伸びのあるヴォーカルを重ね合わせ、まるで映画のような、壮大な広がりを作り上げた第7作だ。ジョン・ウェストが在籍した時期の、最後のスタジオ作にあたる。複雑で凝った構成を持ちながらも、その中心には、常に、明快で覚えやすいメロディが据えられており、楽曲は、緊張と開放との間を、極めて滑らかに往復していく。バンドの、円熟した表現力が光る一枚だ。 冒頭“Hunted”の力強い推進力、劇的な“The Prayer”のドラマ性、そして“Edge of the World”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Can't Let Go”“Burning the Sun”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。シンフォニックで、華やかな色彩が、演奏全体を、大きく包み込みながらも、リズムの持つ、力強い推進力は、決して失われていない。 卓越した演奏技術と、豊かな歌心とを、極めて高い均衡で結びつけた、実にROYAL HUNTらしい一枚だ。ジョン・ウェストの、パワフルな歌声が、その壮大な世界観を、力強く支えている。ジョン・ウェスト在籍時の、充実を締めくくる、聴き応えのあるシンフォニック・メタル作品と言える。この後、バンドは、また新たなヴォーカリストを迎えることになる。バンドの円熟を示す一枚だ。

Eyewitness is the seventh album on which Royal Hunt, layering weighty, precise keyboards, hard guitar and soaring vocals, builds a grand, cinematic expanse. It is the last studio work of the period John West belonged. While holding a complex, elaborate construction, at its center clear, memorable melody is always placed, and the songs move extremely smoothly between tension and release. A record where the band’s mature expression shines. From the powerful drive of the opener “Hunted” and the drama of the dramatic “The Prayer” to a cut like “Edge of the World,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Can’t Let Go” and “Burning the Sun” convey the work’s fullness. Symphonic, gorgeous color largely enfolds the whole playing, yet the rhythm’s powerful drive is by no means lost. A truly Royal Hunt-like record binding outstanding playing technique and rich songcraft at an extremely high balance. John West’s powerful voice powerfully supports that grand world. An engaging symphonic-metal work capping the fullness of John West’s tenure — after which the band would welcome yet another new vocalist. A record showing the band’s maturity.
