『Paper Blood』は、ROYAL HUNTが、厚いキーボード・アレンジ、硬いギター、そして力強いヴォーカルを重ね合わせ、濃密で劇的なドラマを作り上げた作品だ。新ヴォーカリストに、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーン・バンドでも知られる、実力派のマーク・ボールズを迎えて制作された、新体制での第一作である。複雑で凝った展開はあるが、楽曲は、常に、強いメロディと、リズムの、確かな重心とを、しっかりと保っている。バンドの、円熟した実力が光る一枚だ。 冒頭“Break Your Chains”の力強い推進力、“Not My Kind”の攻撃性、そして“Memory Lane”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Never Give Up”“Seven Days”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。陰影に富んだ、緊張感のあるパートと、大きく開かれたコーラスとが、交互に現れることで、アルバムに、まるで舞台のような、確かな起伏を与えている。 ROYAL HUNTならではの、知的で重厚な世界観を、存分に堪能することができる一枚だ。マーク・ボールズの、パワフルで表現力豊かな歌声は、バンドに、また新たな魅力を加えている。ヴォーカリストの交代という、大きな変化を乗り越え、バンドが、その音楽性を、力強く維持してみせた、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。新体制の始まりを告げる一枚だ。

Paper Blood is a work on which Royal Hunt, layering thick keyboard arrangement, hard guitar and powerful vocals, builds dense, dramatic drama. Made welcoming the accomplished Mark Boals, also known from the Yngwie Malmsteen band, as the new vocalist, it is the first work of the new lineup. There are complex, elaborate developments, yet the songs always firmly keep strong melody and a sure rhythmic center. A record where the band’s mature ability shines. From the powerful drive of the opener “Break Your Chains” and the aggression of “Not My Kind” to a cut like “Memory Lane,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Never Give Up” and “Seven Days” convey the work’s fullness. By shaded, tense parts and widely open choruses appearing in turn, it gives the album a sure rise and fall like a stage. A record letting you fully enjoy Royal Hunt’s own intelligent, weighty world. Mark Boals’s powerful, expressive voice adds yet another new appeal to the band.
