Wants You!

『Wants You!』は、ROUGH CUTTがワーナーへ残した2枚目にして最後のスタジオ作だ。プロデュースはエアロスミスの『Toys in the Attic』『Rocks』を手がけたジャック・ダグラス。トム・アロムが前作で築いた壁のように派手な音とは対照的に、ここでの音は乾いて落ち着き、土の匂いがする。ダグラスは曲作りにも手を入れており、仕上がりは明らかに成熟した。編成は変わらず、エイミア・デラクはシンセサイザーも兼ねている。バンドが最も腰を据えて鳴らした一枚だ。 冒頭“Rock the USA”は当時のアンセムであり、“We Like It Loud”はトゥイステッド・シスターの“I Wanna Rock”への返答のようにも響く。“Hot 'n' Heavy”は単純なロッカーに見えて、中間部でラテン・パーカッションを持ち込む変化球だ。だが期待された成功は訪れなかった。ウェンディ・ディオがポール・ショーティノをクワイエット・ライオットへ橋渡しし、彼は1987年にケヴィン・ダブロウの後任として去る。ウォリアーのパラモア・マッカーティが短期間だけ穴を埋めたが、バンドはそのまま解散した。この2枚は2005年と2016年に再発され、評価は静かに上がり続けている。

Wants You! is the second and last studio album Rough Cutt made for Warner Bros. Jack Douglas, who had produced Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic and Rocks, took the chair. Against the showy wall of sound Tom Allom built on the debut, this one is dry, settled and earthier. Douglas also put a hand into the writing, and the result is plainly more mature. The line-up is unchanged, with Amir Derakh doubling on synthesizers. It is the record on which the band sounds most firmly planted. The opener “Rock the USA” was their anthem of the moment, and “We Like It Loud” reads almost as an answer to Twisted Sister's “I Wanna Rock.” “Hot 'n' Heavy” looks like a plain rocker until Latin percussion arrives in its middle section. But the success they were promised never came. Wendy Dio brokered Paul Shortino's move to Quiet Riot, and in 1987 he left to replace Kevin DuBrow. Parramore McCarty of Warrior filled the gap briefly before the band simply folded. Both albums have since been reissued, in 2005 and again in 2016, and their standing has quietly risen.
