The Privilege of Power

『The Privilege of Power』は、RIOTが鋼鉄のリフ、前進する力強いビート、そして誇り高いハイトーン・ヴォーカルを核としながら、そこにブラス・セクションを含む、大胆で異色なアレンジを取り込んだ、極めて野心的な第8作だ。前作『Thundersteel』で確立した、疾走するパワー・メタルの様式を土台に、より壮大でシアトリカルな音楽性へと踏み込んでいる。トニー・ムーアの卓越した歌唱が、その複雑な構成を力強くまとめ上げている。 冒頭“On Your Knees”の攻撃性、“Metal Soldiers”の力強い推進力、“Runaway”のキャッチーさ、そして壮大な“Storming the Gates of Hell”まで、収録曲はいずれも聴き応えがある。ホーン・アレンジや、ニュース音声のサンプリングなど、実験的な要素を大胆に導入し、独自の高い熱量を打ち出している。 正統派パワー・メタルの枠に留まらず、大掛かりなプロダクションで、バンドの表現の可能性を大きく拡張してみせた点に、本作の意義がある。賛否を呼ぶ実験性も含めて、RIOTの野心が色濃く反映された一枚だ。前作とはまた異なる、壮大で密度の高い、意欲的なパワー・メタル作品と言える。マーク・リアリのギターも冴え渡る。

The Privilege of Power is an extremely ambitious eighth album on which Riot, around steel riffs, a powerful forward beat and a proud high vocal, takes in bold, unusual arrangements including a brass section. On the foundation of the dashing power-metal style established on the previous Thundersteel, it steps into a grander, more theatrical musicality. Tony Moore’s outstanding singing powerfully pulls its complex construction together. From the aggression of the opener “On Your Knees” and the powerful drive of “Metal Soldiers” to the catchiness of “Runaway” and the grand “Storming the Gates of Hell,” every song is engaging. Boldly introducing experimental elements such as horn arrangements and sampled news audio, it puts out its own high intensity. Its significance lies in greatly expanding the band’s expressive possibilities with a large-scale production, not staying within the frame of traditional power metal. Including its experiment, which drew mixed views, it is a record strongly reflecting Riot’s ambition. Different from its predecessor, it is a grand, dense, ambitious power-metal work — Mark Reale’s guitar also in sharp form.
