『Narita』は、RIOTがストレートなリフ、鋭いツイン・ギター、そしてガイ・スペランザの高く切迫した歌声を、緊密に結び付けた第2作だ。曲は複雑さよりも、スピードと力強い推進力を選び、若いバンドが持つ、切実で瑞々しい勢いを、そのまま音へと刻み込んでいる。日本の成田空港を巡る出来事から名付けられた、印象的なタイトルを持つ一枚である。 冒頭“Waiting for the Taking”の勢い、“Kick Down the Walls”の攻撃性、そして疾走する“Road Racin'”のエネルギーや、インストゥルメンタルの表題曲“Narita”のドラマ性には、後のアメリカン・ヘヴィ・メタルへとつながる、明確な輪郭が見て取れる。“49er”“Here We Come Again”のような曲も、初期RIOTの魅力を伝えている。 デビュー作の荒々しさを引き継ぎながらも、演奏の力強さと、楽曲のフックが、さらに磨き上げられている点が本作の魅力だ。まだ粗さを残しながらも、強いフックと、熱量の高い演奏とで、聴き手に鮮烈な印象を残していく。“Do It Up”“Hot for Love”のような曲でも、荒々しいリフと疾走感が結び付いている。バンドの個性が固まり始めた、初期RIOTの充実を示す重要な一枚と言える。

Narita is the second album on which Riot tightly binds straight riffs, sharp twin guitars and Guy Speranza’s high, urgent voice. The songs choose speed and powerful drive over complexity, inscribing the earnest, fresh momentum of a young band directly into sound. A record with a striking title, named after events surrounding Japan’s Narita Airport. In the momentum of the opener “Waiting for the Taking,” the aggression of “Kick Down the Walls,” the energy of the dashing “Road Racin’” and the drama of the instrumental title track “Narita,” a clear outline leading to later American heavy metal can be seen, while cuts like “49er” and “Here We Come Again” convey early Riot’s appeal. Its appeal is that, while inheriting the debut’s roughness, the power of the playing and the songs’ hooks are further honed. Still keeping a roughness, it leaves a vivid impression through strong hooks and high-intensity playing. Showing early Riot’s fullness as the band’s character began to set, it is an important record.
