Inishmore

『Inishmore』は、RIOTがケルト音楽の要素を、壮大なヘヴィ・メタルへと大胆に融合させた、叙情的な第9作だ。前作『Brethren』で見せた物語志向を受け継ぎつつ、今度はアイルランドの伝統音楽が持つ、哀愁と高揚感を、作品の核に据えている。マーク・リアリのメロディックなギターと、伸びやかなヴォーカルが、その独特の世界観を、美しく彩っている。 冒頭“Black Water”の力強い推進力、キャッチーな“Angel Eyes”、そして疾走する“Liberty”や“Kings Are Falling”まで、収録曲はいずれもメロディの魅力に満ちている。アイルランドの島の名を冠したインストゥルメンタルの表題曲“Inishmore”や、“Cry for the Dying”のような曲も、作品に深い叙情を与えている。 ヘヴィ・メタルの力強さと、ケルト音楽の持つ美しく哀切なメロディとを、極めて自然な形で結び付けている点が本作の大きな魅力だ。RIOTが得意とする、疾走感と叙情性の両立が、この独自のテーマの下で、見事に開花している。“The Man”“Should I Run”のような曲でも、ケルト的な叙情と力強いリフが結び付いている。メロディック・パワー・メタルの、隠れた名盤とも言える、美しく力強い一枚と言える。

Inishmore is a lyrical ninth album on which Riot boldly fuses Celtic-music elements into grand heavy metal. Inheriting the narrative orientation shown on the previous Brethren, it now places the melancholy and lift of Irish traditional music at the work’s core. Mark Reale’s melodic guitar and soaring vocals beautifully color that distinctive world. From the powerful drive of the opener “Black Water” and the catchy “Angel Eyes” to the dashing “Liberty” and “Kings Are Falling,” every song is full of melodic appeal, while the instrumental title track “Inishmore,” named after an Irish island, and a cut like “Cry for the Dying” give the work deep lyricism. Its great appeal lies in binding the strength of heavy metal and the beautiful, plaintive melody of Celtic music in an extremely natural form. The union of speed and lyricism that Riot does best blooms beautifully under this distinctive theme. A beautiful, powerful record, it can be called a hidden masterpiece of melodic power metal.
