Sons of Society

『Sons of Society』は、RIOTが硬質なリフと、確かなメロディ感覚を軸に、正統派ヘヴィ・メタルの魅力を、より現代的な音像で力強く鳴らした作品だ。前作『Inishmore』での実験的な民族色から、再びストレートで力強いメタルへと軸足を戻しつつ、そこで培った豊かなメロディ感覚を、巧みに活かしている。マーク・リアリのギターと、伸びやかなヴォーカルの相性は抜群だ。 冒頭“Snake Charmer”の攻撃的な推進力、そして表題曲“Sons of Society”の力強さは、バンドの原点回帰の姿勢を、明確に示している。疾走する“Dragonfire”、キャッチーな“Twist of Fate”、そして“On the Wings of Life”のような曲も、収録曲の充実を伝えている。 力強い正統派メタルの推進力と、洗練された叙情的なメロディとを、高い次元で両立させている点が本作の魅力だ。90年代後半という、メタルにとって厳しい時代にあっても、RIOTは、その音楽的な質の高さを、少しも落とすことがなかった。“Bad Machine”“The Law”のような曲でも、硬質なリフと洗練されたメロディが結び付いている。ベテランとなってなお、確かな実力を示した、力強く充実したメロディック・メタル作品と言える。

Sons of Society is a record on which Riot, around hard riffs and a sure melodic sense, powerfully sounds the appeal of traditional heavy metal in a more modern picture. Shifting its footing back from the experimental folk color of the previous Inishmore toward straight, powerful metal again, it deftly uses the rich melodic sense cultivated there. The compatibility of Mark Reale’s guitar and the soaring vocals is superb. The aggressive drive of the opener “Snake Charmer” and the power of the title track “Sons of Society” clearly show the band’s back-to-origin stance, while the dashing “Dragonfire,” the catchy “Twist of Fate” and a cut like “On the Wings of Life” convey the songs’ fullness. Its appeal is uniting the drive of powerful traditional metal and refined, lyrical melody at a high level. Even in the late 1990s, a harsh era for metal, Riot did not lower its high musical quality in the least. Showing sure ability even as veterans, it is a powerful, fulfilling melodic-metal work.
