Born in America

『Born in America』は、RIOTが硬いギター・リフ、まっすぐで力強いリズム、そしてレット・フォレスターの闘志あふれる歌を中心に、実直なヘヴィ・メタルの力を鳴らした第5作だ。曲は過度に飾ることなく、まるで戦うかのような、熱い推進力を全編で一貫して保っている。フォレスターが参加した、2枚目のスタジオ作である。 冒頭の表題曲“Born in America”の力強さ、疾走する“Wings of Fire”、そして“Heavy Metal Machine”“Where Soldiers Rule”には、明快なメロディを持ちながらも、力強く前へと押し出していく、確かな推進力がある。“You Burn in Me”のような曲も、バンドの熱量を伝えている。 レコード会社との軋轢など、逆境の中で制作された作品でありながら、演奏の芯を全く失うことのない、バンドの粘り強さを強く感じさせる一枚だ。この作品を最後に、バンドは一度長い活動休止に入ることになる。派手さよりも、実直で硬派なアメリカン・ヘヴィ・メタルの魅力を、力強く追求した意欲作と言える。“Vigilante Killer”“Gunfighter”のような曲でも、硬いリフとまっすぐなリズムが結び付いている。フォレスター期を締めくくる一枚だ。

Born in America is the fifth album on which Riot, around hard guitar riffs, straight, powerful rhythm and Rhett Forrester’s fighting-spirited singing, sounds the force of plain heavy metal. The songs, without over-decorating, keep a hot drive throughout as if fighting. It is the second studio album to feature Forrester. In the power of the opening title track “Born in America,” the dashing “Wings of Fire” and “Heavy Metal Machine” and “Where Soldiers Rule,” there is a sure drive that pushes powerfully forward while holding clear melody, and a cut like “You Burn in Me” conveys the band’s intensity. Though a work made amid adversity, such as friction with the record company, it is a record that strongly conveys the band’s tenacity, never losing the core of its playing. After this work, the band would enter a long hiatus. Powerfully pursuing the appeal of plain, hard-edged American heavy metal over flash, it is an ambitious work — a record capping the Forrester era.
