『Detonator』は、滑らかなプロダクションと鋭いギターを組み合わせ、RATTが成熟したメロディック・ハードへ踏み込んだ第5作だ。スティーヴン・パーシー(ヴォーカル)、ウォーレン・デマルティーニとロビン・クロスビー(ギター)、フアン・クルーシェ(ベース)、ボビー・ブロッツァー(ドラム)による演奏に、ヒット・メイカーのデズモンド・チャイルドが共作者として加わった。時代の変化に対応すべく、より洗練された音作りを追求している。 “Shame Shame Shame”の力強い推進力、“Lovin' You's a Dirty Job”のフックは、円熟したバンドの表現を伝える。“Givin' Yourself Away”の壮大なバラードも印象的だ。結果的に、これがロビン・クロスビーの参加した最後のアルバムとなった。“One Step Away”“Top Secret”のような楽曲でも、洗練されたメロディと鋭いギターが一体となる。サー・アーサー・ペイソンのプロデュースにより、音像はより広く磨き上げられた。グランジ台頭の直前という時期もあり、本作はグラム・メタル黄金期の掉尾を飾ることになった。往年の多倍プラチナには届かなかったが、80年代グラム・メタルの一つの到達点を示す一枚である。

Detonator is the fifth album, on which RATT stepped into mature melodic hard rock by combining smooth production and sharp guitar. To the playing of Stephen Pearcy (vocals), Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby (guitar), Juan Croucier (bass) and Bobby Blotzer (drums), hit-maker Desmond Child joined as a co-writer. To respond to the changing times, it pursued a more refined sound. The powerful drive of "Shame Shame Shame" and the hook of "Lovin' You's a Dirty Job" convey the mature band's expression. The grand ballad "Givin' Yourself Away" is also striking. As it turned out, this became the last album on which Robbin Crosby took part. It did not reach the multi-Platinum of old, but it is a record that shows one culmination of 1980s glam metal.
