Ratt

セルフタイトル作『Ratt』は、乾いたギター・リフ、跳ねるリズム、少し危ういヴォーカルの色気を軸にした、RATTらしいハード・ロック作品だ。1992年の解散を経て再結成したバンドは、スティーヴン・パーシー(ヴォーカル)、ウォーレン・デマルティーニ(ギター)、ボビー・ブロッツァー(ドラム)を中心に、ロビー・クレイン(ベース)、ジョン・コラビ(ギター)を迎えて制作した。派手な装飾よりも、リフの切れ味と曲の勢いを優先している。 “Over the Edge”の推進力、“Luv Sick”のフックは、バンド本来のストリート感を伝える。“Breakout”“So Good, So Fine”のような楽曲にも、タフさとキャッチーさが共存する。故ロビン・クロスビーを欠いた編成ながら、RATTらしい持ち味は健在だ。“Live for Today”“It Ain't Easy”のような楽曲でも、乾いたリフとパーシーの色気ある歌声が一体となる。コラビの加入により、バンドのギター・サウンドには新たな厚みが加わった。グラム・メタル退潮の時代にあっても、彼らは自らの持ち味を貫いてみせた。商業的成功は限られたが、90年代末に改めて自分たちのサウンドを鳴らした一枚である。

The self-titled Ratt is a RATT-like hard-rock work centered on dry guitar riffs, bouncing rhythm and slightly precarious vocal allure. Reformed after the 1992 breakup, the band made it centered on Stephen Pearcy (vocals), Warren DeMartini (guitar) and Bobby Blotzer (drums), welcoming Robbie Crane (bass) and John Corabi (guitar). It prioritizes the edge of the riffs and the momentum of the songs over flashy decoration. The drive of "Over the Edge" and the hook of "Luv Sick" convey the band's inherent street feel. Toughness and catchiness coexist on songs like "Breakout" and "So Good, So Fine" too. Though the lineup lacked the late Robbin Crosby, the RATT character is alive and well. Commercial success was limited, but it is a record that again sounded their own sound at the end of the 1990s.
