『XIII』は、RAGEがオーケストラを取り入れ、重いリフとパワー・メタルの勢いを大きなスケールへと広げた作品だ。壮麗な響きは単なる装飾ではなく、曲の緊張や感情の起伏を強める役割を果たしている。バンドの野心と構成力が、これまで以上に前面へ出た一枚である。 序曲“Overture”から“From the Cradle to the Grave”へと続く流れが、作品の大きなスケール感を印象づける。“Sign of Heaven”“Heartblood”のようにメロディを重視した曲、“Days of December”“Immortal Sin”のようにドラマ性を強めた曲が並び、速い演奏とクラシカルなアレンジがぶつかり合って独自のドラマを生む。 “Turn the Page”“Just Alone”のような曲に見られる緩急の付け方も巧みで、長尺のアルバムを最後まで聴かせる。“Over and Over”“In Vain (I Won't Go Down)”のような曲では、重厚なリフと壮麗なアレンジが噛み合い、緊張感を保ったままスケールを広げていく。長尺でありながら、場面ごとのメリハリがはっきりしているため、集中を切らさず聴き通せる。オーケストラとヘヴィ・メタルの共存という、RAGEが繰り返し挑んできた主題を、より大規模な形で結実させた意欲作である。

The band’s ambition and command of structure come to the fore more than ever. The flow from the “Overture” into “From the Cradle to the Grave” establishes the album’s wide scale, while melody-minded songs such as “Sign of Heaven” and “Heartblood” sit beside more dramatic pieces like “Days of December” and “Immortal Sin,” with fast playing and classical arrangement colliding to create their own drama. The deft handling of dynamics in songs like “Turn the Page” and “Just Alone” keeps a long album engaging to the end. It is an ambitious record that brings RAGE’s recurring theme — the coexistence of orchestra and heavy metal — to fruition on a larger scale.
