Ghosts

『Ghosts』は、RAGEがいつもの鋭いメタル感を少し後ろへ引き、アコースティックな響きや静かなメロディを丁寧に扱った異色作だ。激しさをあえて抑えたことで、歌が持つ哀感や、コード進行の陰影がよりはっきりと浮かび上がってくる。バンドの新たな一面を示した実験的な一枚である。 疾走や重量で押すのではなく、旋律とアレンジの機微で聴かせる本作は、RAGEというバンドの表現の幅を大きく広げた。オーケストラ的な色彩や内省的なムードが全体を包み、これまでの作品とは異なる静かな緊張感が漂っている。 とはいえ、完全に軽量化してしまうのではなく、随所にバンドらしい張り詰めた空気が残っているのがポイントだ。ヘヴィネスの奥にある叙情性を前面へ引き出したことで、硬さだけではないRAGEの奥行きが見えてくる。静かな旋律とアコースティックな質感が主役となることで、ピーヴィー・ワグナーの歌に潜む哀感が、これまで以上に生々しく伝わってくる。激しいリフに頼らないぶん、メロディそのものの強度やコード進行の陰影が問われるが、本作はその難しさに真正面から向き合っている。RAGEのディスコグラフィの中でも異彩を放つ一枚であり、賛否を含めて長く語り継がれてきた実験作だ。攻撃性を離れた場所でこそ際立つ、彼らの音楽性の深さを知るための興味深い作品である。

Ghosts is an unusual record in which RAGE pulls its usual sharp metal edge back a little and carefully handles acoustic textures and quiet melody. By deliberately restraining the intensity, the melancholy of the singing and the shading of the chord progressions rise more clearly to the surface — a side of the band shown here for the first time. Rather than pressing with speed or weight, the album holds the listener through subtleties of melody and arrangement, greatly widening RAGE’s expressive range. Orchestral color and an introspective mood wrap the whole, and a quiet tension unlike the band’s other work drifts through it. Even so, the key is that it never becomes wholly lightweight; a taut, band-like air remains in places. By drawing out the lyricism beneath the heaviness, it reveals a depth beyond hardness — an intriguing record for understanding a musicality that stands out precisely away from aggression.
