セルフタイトルの『QR』は、QUIET RIOTが、看板であったヴォーカリスト、ケヴィン・ダブロウが一時的にバンドを離れ、新たにポール・ショーティノを迎えて制作された、大きな転換期の作品だ。従来のグラム・メタル的なイメージから、少し距離を置き、太いギターと、ブルース感を含んだリズムを軸に、曲は、より落ち着いた、大人びた重さを見せている。ショーティノの、ソウルフルで力強い歌声が、バンドに新たな表情を与えている。 メロディアスな“Stay with Me Tonight”のような場面でも、その演奏には、80年代後半ならではの、少し粗く硬質な手触りが残っている。派手なパーティー・アンセムとは異なる、より本格的なハード・ロックを志向した内容だ。バンドの顔とも言えるダブロウの不在は、賛否を呼んだものの、この新体制ならではの、独特の雰囲気が確かにある。 長いキャリアの中でも、ヴォーカリストの交代という点で、特に異色の位置を占める一枚だ。編成の大きな変化を、そのまま別の音色へとつなげた、実験的な側面も持っている。QUIET RIOTの、また違った可能性を垣間見せる、渋く落ち着いた、興味深いハード・ロック作品と言える。この後、バンドは再びダブロウを迎えることになる。

The self-titled QR is a work of a great transitional period, made after the flagship vocalist Kevin DuBrow temporarily left the band and Paul Shortino was newly welcomed. Distancing a little from the former glam-metal image, around thick guitar and bluesy rhythm, the songs show a more settled, grown-up weight. Shortino’s soulful, powerful voice gives the band a new face. Even in melodic passages such as “Stay with Me Tonight,” the playing keeps a somewhat rough, hard feel particular to the late 1980s. Content oriented toward more serious hard rock, different from flashy party anthems. Though the absence of DuBrow, the band’s face, drew mixed views, there is surely a distinctive atmosphere particular to this new lineup. Even in a long career, it occupies a particularly unusual place in terms of a vocalist swap. It also has an experimental side, connecting the great lineup change directly to a different sound. Glimpsing another possibility of Quiet Riot, it is a cool, settled, intriguing hard-rock work — after which the band would welcome DuBrow again.
