QR III

『QR III』は、QUIET RIOTが、従来の直線的なメタル感を残しながらも、より多くのキーボードと、洗練されたメロディを、大胆に取り入れた、意欲的な第5作だ。前2作の、生々しいパーティー・メタル路線から、より当時のトレンドを意識した、メロディックでアリーナ・ロック的な方向へと、大きく舵を切っている。ケヴィン・ダブロウの個性的な声は、相変わらず前面に出ているが、楽曲は、コーラスや、アレンジの滑らかさによって、これまでとは異なる、新たな表情を見せている。 冒頭のヒット曲“The Wild and the Young”の力強い推進力、そして“Twilight Hotel”のドラマ性まで、収録曲には、アリーナ・ロックとしての、大きな開放感がある。“Down and Dirty”の攻撃性、“Slave to Love”“Still of the Night”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。カルロス・カヴァーゾのギターも、新たな音楽性に、巧みに対応している。 バンド本来の、力強い基本的な勢いを、しっかりと保ちながらも、80年代半ばの、時代の洗練へと、着実に歩み寄った一枚として聴くことができる。より幅広い聴き手を意識した、キャッチーなメロディが、全編に散りばめられている。QUIET RIOTの、また別の側面を示した、メロディックで充実したハード・ロック作品と言える。

QR III is an ambitious fifth album on which Quiet Riot, while keeping its former straight metal feel, boldly takes in more keyboards and refined melody. From the raw party-metal direction of the first two albums, it steers greatly toward a melodic, arena-rock direction more conscious of the trends of the day. Kevin DuBrow’s distinctive voice comes to the fore as ever, yet the songs show a new face, different from before, through the smoothness of the choruses and arrangement. From the powerful drive of the opening hit “The Wild and the Young” to the drama of “Twilight Hotel,” the songs have a great arena-rock openness, while the aggression of “Down and Dirty” and cuts like “Slave to Love” and “Still of the Night” convey the work’s fullness. Carlos Cavazo’s guitar also deftly adapts to the new musicality. It can be heard as a record that, while firmly keeping the band’s native powerful momentum, steadily moved toward the refinement of the mid-1980s. Catchy melody conscious of a wider audience is scattered throughout. Showing another side of Quiet Riot, it is a melodic, fulfilling hard-rock work.
