セルフタイトルの『Queensrÿche』は、QUEENSRŸCHEが、鋭いギター・リフ、ドラマティックなヴォーカル、そして緊張感あふれる展開を再び前面に押し出し、バンドの、正統派プログレッシヴ・メタル像を、力強く改めて示した、再出発の作品だ。ヴォーカリストが、ジェフ・テイトから、新たにトッド・ラ・トゥーレへと交代した後の、最初のスタジオ・アルバムにあたる。楽曲は、重く硬質でありながらも、そのサビには、印象深い、覚えやすい旋律が、しっかりと置かれている。 冒頭“Where Dreams Go to Die”の力強い推進力、“Redemption”のドラマ性、そして“Vindication”の攻撃性まで、収録曲は、往年のバンドを彷彿とさせる、鋭いメタルの魅力に満ちている。“Spore”“A World Without”のような曲も、バンドの完全復活を告げている。ラ・トゥーレの、テイトを彷彿とさせる、力強くドラマティックな歌声は、ファンから熱狂的に迎えられた。 知的で緻密な構成と、ハード・ロックとしての、直接的な力強さとを、見事に両立させ、初期の名作群が持っていた魅力を、現在の演奏で、力強く鳴らし直している点が本作の魅力だ。長い混乱の時期を経て、バンドが、自らの原点へと回帰したことを、高らかに告げる一枚である。リフと歌の、絶妙なバランスを重視する、往年のファンに、強くお勧めできる、力強い復活作と言える。

The self-titled Queensrÿche is a restart on which Queensrÿche again foregrounds sharp guitar riffs, dramatic vocals and tension-filled development, powerfully reaffirming the band’s traditional progressive-metal image. It is the first studio album after the vocalist changed from Geoff Tate to the new Todd La Torre. The songs, while heavy and hard, firmly place a striking, memorable melody in their choruses. From the powerful drive of the opener “Where Dreams Go to Die” and the drama of “Redemption” to the aggression of “Vindication,” the songs are full of a sharp metal appeal evoking the band of old, while cuts like “Spore” and “A World Without” announce the band’s full revival. La Torre’s powerful, dramatic voice, evoking Tate, was enthusiastically welcomed by fans. Its appeal is beautifully uniting intelligent, precise construction and the direct power of hard rock, and powerfully re-sounding the appeal the early masterpieces held with present-day playing. After a long period of turmoil, it is a record that loftily announces the band’s return to its own origin. It can be strongly recommended to longtime fans who value the exquisite balance of riffs and singing — a powerful comeback.
