『Dedicated to Chaos』は、QUEENSRŸCHEが、ダークな音像、変則的なリズム、そして電子的な質感を大胆に使い、従来のメタル像から、大きく距離を取った、極めて実験的な作品だ。ヴォーカリスト、ジェフ・テイトが在籍した、最後のスタジオ・アルバムにあたる。彼の歌は、硬質なバンド・サウンドの中で、独特の不穏な物語性を生み出しているが、その音楽性は、これまでのファンにとって、意外なものであった。 直線的なメタルのリフよりも、曲全体の空気と、細かなアレンジの、微妙な変化に、その重心が置かれている。ファンク、ポップ、エレクトロニックといった、多様な要素を、積極的に取り込んでおり、プログレッシヴ・メタルという、従来の枠組みからは、大きく逸脱している。“Get Started”“Higher”“Got It Bad”のような曲が、その多彩な音楽性を伝えている。 バンドのカタログの中でも、最も賛否を呼び、実験的な側面を持つ一枚だ。ジェフ・テイト時代の、一つの終着点であり、この後、バンドは大きな転換期を迎えることになる。従来のイメージとは大きく異なるため、評価は分かれるものの、バンドが、変化を恐れずに挑んだ、その実験精神を映した、興味深い作品と言える。物議を醸した一枚だ。

Dedicated to Chaos is an extremely experimental work on which Queensrÿche, boldly using a dark sound, irregular rhythm and electronic texture, greatly distances itself from its former metal image. It is the last studio album with vocalist Geoff Tate. His singing creates a distinctive uneasy narrative within the hard band sound, yet its musicality was surprising for former fans. Its weight is placed on the whole song’s air and subtle changes of fine arrangement, rather than straight metal riffs. Actively taking in diverse elements such as funk, pop and electronic, it greatly deviates from the former frame of progressive metal, while cuts like “Get Started,” “Higher” and “Got It Bad” convey its varied musicality. Even in the band’s catalog, it is a record that drew the most mixed views and has an experimental side. One terminus of the Geoff Tate era, after which the band would face a great transition. Because it differs greatly from the former image, views are divided, yet it can be called an intriguing work reflecting the experimental spirit with which the band took on change unafraid — a controversial record.
