Promised Land

『Promised Land』は、QUEENSRŸCHEが、前作『Empire』での大きな成功から、意識的に距離を取り、より暗く、内省的な音像を、深く掘り下げた第5作だ。名声や、成功がもたらす虚無感といった、重いテーマが全編を貫いている。ジェフ・テイトの歌は、派手に突き抜けるよりも、抑制の効いた、感情の揺れを映す、深い陰影として機能している。硬いリフ、沈んだ鍵盤、そして緻密なアレンジが、静かで、張り詰めた緊張を作り出す。 冒頭の環境音から始まる本作は、“I Am I”のドラマ性、“Bridge”の叙情、そして表題曲“Promised Land”の深い内省まで、楽曲の表面的な派手さよりも、その内側で起きている、繊細な感情の変化へと、聴き手の耳を、じっくりと向けさせていく。“Damaged”“My Global Mind”のような曲も、作品の深いテーマ性を伝えている。 即効性のある分かりやすさよりも、時間をかけて、じっくりと深まっていく方向を、あえて選んだことで、単なる成功の反復ではない、極めて成熟した表現として、強い存在感を放っている一枚だ。大きなサビをただ待つのではなく、声が抑えられる箇所や、鍵盤が余白を埋め過ぎない箇所の、その深い余韻を味わいたい。バンドの芸術性の高さを示す、聴き応えのある力作と言える。

Promised Land is the fifth album on which Queensrÿche, consciously distancing itself from the great success of the previous Empire, deeply digs into a darker, more introspective sound. Heavy themes such as fame and the emptiness success brings run throughout. Geoff Tate’s singing functions as deep shading reflecting restrained emotional wavering, rather than flashily piercing through. Hard riffs, sunken keyboards and precise arrangement create a quiet, taut tension. Beginning from ambient sound, from the drama of “I Am I” and the lyricism of “Bridge” to the deep introspection of the title track “Promised Land,” it carefully turns the listener’s ear toward the delicate emotional changes happening within, rather than the songs’ surface flash, while cuts like “Damaged” and “My Global Mind” convey the work’s deep thematics. By deliberately choosing a direction that deepens slowly over time, rather than immediate accessibility, it gives off a strong presence as an extremely mature expression that is not a mere repetition of success. Rather than merely awaiting big choruses, one wants to savor the deep afterglow where the voice is restrained and the keyboards do not over-fill the space. Showing the band’s high artistry, it is an engaging, powerful work.
