『Crack a Smile... and More!』は、POISONが長い年月を経てようやく世に出した、いわくつきの第5作だ。中心となる楽曲は、ブルース・サラチェノをギターに迎えて1994年から95年にかけて録音された。ブレット・マイケルズ(ヴォーカル)、ボビー・ダール(ベース)、リッキー・ロケット(ドラム)にサラチェノが加わった編成である。マイケルズの自動車事故によりアルバムはお蔵入りとなり、ファンの熱望を受けて2000年にようやくリリースされた。 “Best Thing You Ever Had”の躍動、“Be the One”のフックは、この時期ならではの引き締まった演奏を伝える。ドクター・フックのカヴァー“Cover of the Rolling Stone”も収録されている。未発表音源やアウトテイクも加えた構成で、失われかけた時期の記録を丁寧に補完している。“Sexual Thing”“That's the Way I Like It”のような楽曲でも、軽快なノリとバンドの一体感が息づく。サラチェノのギターは、デヴィルとは異なる滑らかな感触をバンドにもたらした。長らくブートレグでしか聴けなかった音源が正式に日の目を見た意義は大きい。空白期の隙間を埋める、ファンにとって貴重な一枚である。

Crack a Smile... and More! is a fraught fifth album that Poison finally released after many years. Its core songs were recorded from 1994 to 1995 with Blues Saraceno on guitar. The lineup adds Saraceno to Bret Michaels (vocals), Bobby Dall (bass) and Rikki Rockett (drums). Due to Michaels's car accident the album was shelved, and it was finally released in 2000 after fervent demand from fans. The dynamism of "Best Thing You Ever Had" and the hook of "Be the One" convey the tight playing characteristic of this period. The Dr. Hook cover "Cover of the Rolling Stone" is also included. With a construction adding unreleased material and outtakes, it carefully fills in the record of an almost-lost period. A precious record for fans that bridges the gap of a blank period.
