『Ozzmosis』は、『No More Tears』後に一度は引退を表明したオジー・オズボーンが、シーンへ復帰して制作した第7作だ。ギターにザック・ワイルドを迎えつつ、ベースには元BLACK SABBATHのギーザー・バトラー、ドラムにディーン・カストロノヴォ、さらにリック・ウェイクマンが鍵盤で参加するという豪華な布陣が組まれた。マイケル・ベインホーンのプロデュースのもと、90年代らしい重く緻密な音像と、陰影に富んだメロディが結び付き、オジーの内省的な側面を深く描き出している。 シングルとなった“Perry Mason”は、ミステリアスなリフと壮大な展開でアルバムの幕を開ける代表曲だ。レミー・キルミスターが作詞に関わった“See You on the Other Side”の叙情、“I Just Want You”のキャッチーさ、“Thunder Underground”の重量感まで、楽曲は多彩な表情を見せる。旧盟友バトラーの参加が生む太い低音と、ワイルドの分厚いギターが、円熟したオジーの歌を力強く支えている。派手さよりも深みと質感を重視した本作は、90年代半ばのオジーの充実を静かに刻んだ好盤である。

Ozzmosis is the seventh album, made after Ozzy Osbourne — who had once announced his retirement following No More Tears — returned to the scene. With Zakk Wylde on guitar, the lineup was lavish: former Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, drummer Deen Castronovo, and Rick Wakeman on keyboards. Under Michael Beinhorn’s production, a heavy, meticulous 1990s sound joins richly shaded melodies, deeply drawing out Ozzy’s introspective side. The single “Perry Mason” opens the album as a signature song with its mysterious riff and grand development. From the lyricism of “See You on the Other Side,” co-written by Lemmy Kilmister, to the catchiness of “I Just Want You” and the weight of “Thunder Underground,” the songs show varied faces. The thick low end from old ally Butler and Wylde’s dense guitar powerfully support the singing of a matured Ozzy. Weighting depth and texture over flash, it is a fine record that quietly captures Ozzy’s fullness in the mid-1990s.
