『Imaginaerum』は、NIGHTWISHがオーケストラ、合唱、ヘヴィなギター、アネット・オルゾンの歌を重ね、夢と記憶をめぐる幻想的な物語を描いた作品だ。曲ごとに映画音楽のような場面転換があり、アルバム全体はひとつの大きな旅として進んでいく。同名の映画とともに構想された、野心的なコンセプト・アルバムである。 “Storytime”“I Want My Tears Back”“Last Ride of the Day”といった楽曲では、壮大な曲だけでなく、静かな旋律や遊園地を思わせる色彩も物語性を深めている。“Scaretale”“Turn Loose the Mermaids”“Song of Myself”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作はアネット・オルゾンが参加した最後の作品となり彼女は本作のツアー中にバンドを去っており、“Ghost River”“Rest Calm”“The Crow, the Owl and the Dove”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。映画とアルバムが一体となった、バンド屈指の野心作だ。ジャズやフォークの要素も取り入れ、これまで以上に多彩な音楽性を示している。シンフォニック・メタルのスケールと想像力を存分に味わえる、大作である。

Imaginaerum is a work on which NIGHTWISH layered orchestra, chorus, heavy guitar and Anette Olzon’s singing, drawing a fantastical story about dreams and memory. Each song has a scene change like film music, and the whole album advances as one great journey. Conceived together with a film of the same name, it is an ambitious concept album. On “Storytime,” “I Want My Tears Back” and “Last Ride of the Day,” not only grand songs but also quiet melodies and amusement-park-like color deepen the narrative. Songs like “Scaretale,” “Turn Loose the Mermaids” and “Song of Myself” breathe the band’s full playing too. Taking in jazz and folk elements, they show more varied musicality than ever. It is an epic on which the scale and imagination of symphonic metal can be fully savored.
