『Dark Passion Play』は、NIGHTWISHがメタル・バンドの推進力とフルオーケストラの広がりを、より大胆な物語へと結び付けた作品だ。新たな歌声は曲に親密さを加え、壮大な編曲との対比を鮮明にしている。ターヤ・トゥルネンの脱退を経て、新ヴォーカリストのアネット・オルゾンを迎えて制作された一枚である。 “The Poet and the Pendulum”“Amaranth”“Bye Bye Beautiful”といった楽曲では、長大なドラマから即効性のあるフックまで、アルバムは極端な振れ幅をひとつの世界へまとめ上げている。“Eva”“Sahara”“7 Days to the Wolves”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。ターヤ・トゥルネンの解雇はファンに衝撃を与えたがアネット・オルゾンの親しみやすい歌声はバンドに新たな魅力を加えており、“Cadence of Her Last Breath”“The Islander”“Meadows of Heaven”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。困難な時期を乗り越え、バンドの底力を示した重要作である。ケルト音楽の要素も大胆に取り入れ、表現の幅を大きく広げている。ヴォーカル交代という転換点を、堂々たるスケールで刻んだ一枚である。

Dark Passion Play is a work on which NIGHTWISH bound the drive of a metal band and the breadth of a full orchestra to a bolder story. The new voice adds intimacy to the songs, sharpening the contrast with the grand arrangement. Made after Tarja Turunen’s departure, welcoming new vocalist Anette Olzon, it is a record. On “The Poet and the Pendulum,” “Amaranth” and “Bye Bye Beautiful,” from long-form drama to immediate hooks, the album brings its extreme range together into a single world. Songs like “Eva,” “Sahara” and “7 Days to the Wolves” breathe the band’s full playing too. Boldly taking in Celtic-music elements, they greatly widened their expressive range. It is a record that carved the turning point of a vocal change on a grand scale.
