『Human. :||: Nature.』は、人間の営みと自然の壮大さという対比を主題に、NIGHTWISHが二枚組へ挑んだ第9作だ。フロア・ヤンセン(ヴォーカル)、トゥオマス・ホロパイネン(キーボード)、エンプ・ヴオリネン(ギター)、マルコ・ヒエタラ(ベース/ヴォーカル)、カイ・ハハト(ドラム)、トロイ・ドナックリー(パイプ)という布陣で制作された。歌ものを集めた1枚目と、オーケストラのみによる組曲の2枚目という大胆な構成を取る。
1枚目では“Noise”の力強い問題提起、“Harvest”のフォーキーな高揚、“How's the Heart?”の温かさが並ぶ。2枚目の組曲「All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World」は、八つの楽章を通して自然の情景を描く器楽作品だ。メタルとオーケストラを完全に切り分けた本作は、バンドの音楽的探究心の深さを示す意欲作である。7分を超える開幕曲“Music”の荘厳さ、“Shoemaker”の物語性も、1枚目の充実を伝える。組曲の終曲“Ad Astra”は星々へ向かうような余韻を残し、二枚組全体を静かに締めくくる。マルコ・ヒエタラにとっては最後の参加作となった。
