『Human. :||: Nature.』は、人間の営みと自然の壮大さという対比を主題に、NIGHTWISHが二枚組へ挑んだ第9作だ。フロア・ヤンセン(ヴォーカル)、トゥオマス・ホロパイネン(キーボード)、エンプ・ヴオリネン(ギター)、マルコ・ヒエタラ(ベース/ヴォーカル)、カイ・ハハト(ドラム)、トロイ・ドナックリー(パイプ)という布陣で制作された。歌ものを集めた1枚目と、オーケストラのみによる組曲の2枚目という大胆な構成を取る。 1枚目では“Noise”の力強い問題提起、“Harvest”のフォーキーな高揚、“How's the Heart?”の温かさが並ぶ。2枚目の組曲「All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World」は、八つの楽章を通して自然の情景を描く器楽作品だ。メタルとオーケストラを完全に切り分けた本作は、バンドの音楽的探究心の深さを示す意欲作である。7分を超える開幕曲“Music”の荘厳さ、“Shoemaker”の物語性も、1枚目の充実を伝える。組曲の終曲“Ad Astra”は星々へ向かうような余韻を残し、二枚組全体を静かに締めくくる。マルコ・ヒエタラにとっては最後の参加作となった。

Human. :II: Nature. is the ninth album, on which NIGHTWISH took on a double album with the contrast of human endeavor and the grandeur of nature as its theme. It was made with the lineup of Floor Jansen (vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards), Emppu Vuorinen (guitar), Marco Hietala (bass/vocals), Kai Hahto (drums) and Troy Donockley (pipes). It takes a bold structure: a first disc gathering songs, and a second disc that is an orchestra-only suite. On disc one, the powerful call of "Noise," the folky elation of "Harvest" and the warmth of "How's the Heart?" line up. Disc two's suite "All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World" is an instrumental work depicting scenes of nature across eight movements. Completely separating metal and orchestra, it is an ambitious work showing the depth of the band's musical inquiry. For Marco Hietala, it became his last album with the band.
