Curb

『Curb』は、後年の大規模なロック像よりも、荒く近い音像でNICKELBACKの出発点を聴かせる作品だ。重いギター、陰りのあるメロディ、切実なヴォーカルが、ポスト・グランジの空気を素直に吸い込んでいる。カナダのアルバータ州出身のバンドが、自主制作で世に問うたデビュー作である。 “Little Friend”“Pusher”“Curb”といった楽曲では、整い切っていない部分も含めて、曲を書き、演奏し、前へ進もうとする熱がある。チャド・クルーガーのざらついた歌声は、この時点で早くもバンドの個性を決定づけている。“Fly”“Where?”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい荒削りな魅力が息づいている。本作は当初ごく限られた枚数しかプレスされず後年のバンドの成功を思えば信じがたいほど素朴な出発点だったが、“Detangler”“Sea Groove”“Left”のような楽曲にも初期らしい荒削りな魅力が息づいている。この時期のドラマーは、チャドのいとこであるブランドン・クルーガーが務めていた。90年代グランジの影響を色濃く感じさせる、貴重な原点だ。大きな成功の前にあったバンドの輪郭を知るうえで、重要な初期作である。

Curb is a work that, rather than the large-scale rock image of later years, lets you hear NICKELBACK’s starting point with a rough, close sound image. Heavy guitar, shadowed melody and earnest vocals honestly breathe in the air of post-grunge. It is the debut that the band from Alberta, Canada, put out to the world through self-production. On “Little Friend,” “Pusher” and “Curb,” including the not-fully-polished parts, there is a heat that writes, plays and tries to move forward. Chad Kroeger’s rough voice already determines the band’s individuality at this point. Songs like “Fly” and “Where?” breathe an early, rough appeal too. It is a precious origin that strongly conveys the influence of 1990s grunge. It is an important early work for knowing the outline of the band that existed before its great success.
