The State

『The State』は、NICKELBACKが重いギター、硬いリズム、ざらついたヴォーカルで、率直なポスト・グランジ・ロックを鳴らした初期作だ。曲はシンプルな構成を軸にしながら、サビでは大きく感情を押し出している。バンドの名を広く知らしめた、実質的なブレイク作である。 “Leader of Men”“Breathe”“Old Enough”といった楽曲では、洗練されすぎない音の手触りが、作品の切実さを強めている。とりわけ“Leader of Men”は、バンド初期の人気曲となった。“Cowboy Hat”“Worthy to Say”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は1998年に自主リリースされた後メジャー・レーベルと契約して2000年に再発され全米でヒットを記録しており、“Deep”“One Last Run”“Hold Out Your Hand”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。バンドが世界的な成功を掴む、その直前の姿を捉えた一枚だ。パール・ジャムらグランジの影響を明快なメロディへと昇華させた、聴き応えのある一枚である。後のバンド像へつながる、リフとメロディの基礎を聴くことができる。次作での大成功へとつながる、重要な一枚だ。

The State is an early work on which NICKELBACK, with heavy guitar, hard rhythm and rough vocals, sounded straightforward post-grunge rock. While centered on simple construction, in the choruses they push out emotion greatly. It is the effective breakthrough work that made the band’s name widely known. On “Leader of Men,” “Breathe” and “Old Enough,” the not-overly-polished feel of the sound strengthens the work’s earnestness. In particular, “Leader of Men” became a popular song of the band’s early period. Songs like “Cowboy Hat” and “Worthy to Say” breathe the band’s full playing too. One can hear the foundation of the riffs and melody that connects to the later band image. It is an important record that leads to the great success on the next album.
