『Hey Man』は、ポール・ギルバートとビリー・シーンの技巧を曲のために使い、エリック・マーティンのメロディを大きく立たせたMR. BIGらしい作品だ。ハード・ロックの押し出しと、柔らかなバラード感が同居し、4人の演奏が細部までよく噛み合っている。円熟したバンドの、安定した魅力が感じられる一枚である。 “Trapped In Toyland”“Goin' Where the Wind Blows”“Take Cover”といった楽曲では、華やかなフックの裏に、リズムやアレンジの細かな工夫が隠れている。フリートウッド・マックの名曲“The Chain”のカヴァーも収録されている。“Where Do I Fit In?”“Mama D.”“Out of the Underground”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は当初のラインナップによる4枚目のスタジオ・アルバムでありバンドの一体感が頂点に達した時期の作品で、技巧と歌心のバランスが絶妙なMR. Hey Man is a characteristically MR. BIG work that used the technique of Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan for the songs and made Eric Martin’s melody stand out greatly. Hard-rock push and a soft ballad feel coexist, and the four members’ playing meshes well to the details. It is a record on which a matured band’s stable appeal can be felt. On “Trapped In Toyland,” “Goin' Where the Wind Blows” and “Take Cover,” fine ingenuity of rhythm and arrangement hides behind the flashy hooks. A cover of Fleetwood Mac’s classic “The Chain” is also included. Songs like “Jane Doe” and “Tears” breathe the band’s full playing too. Rather than mere virtuosity, it shows the band’s melodic sense taking the leading role. It is a full record on which playing ability and song appeal balance at a high level.
