Bump Ahead

『Bump Ahead』は、MR. BIGが卓越した演奏技術を土台に、より柔らかな歌心と多彩なアレンジを並べた90年代初頭の作品だ。ギターとベースは技巧を見せながらも、曲の流れを壊さず互いを支えている。前作の成功を受けて、バンドがさらに幅を広げた一枚である。 “Colorado Bulldog”“Price You Gotta Pay”“Wild World”といった楽曲では、ヴォーカルは力強いロック曲でもバラードでも自然な表情を保ち、コーラスは過剰にならず大きな余韻を残す。キャット・スティーヴンスの名曲“Wild World”のカヴァーも収録されている。“Promise Her the Moon”“Long Way Down”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。前作の世界的ヒットを受けて制作された本作はより落ち着いた円熟味とバンドの結束を感じさせ、派手さよりも楽曲の質を重視したMR. BIGの新たな一面を示す味わい深い一枚である。スーパーグループ的な派手さを持ちながら、アンサンブルを優先している。曲ごとの親しみやすさと演奏の奥行きが共存する、充実した一枚だ。ソロの技巧だけでなく、ベースとギターが歌の隙間をどう埋めるかにも注目したい、聴きどころの多い作品である。

Bump Ahead is an early-1990s work on which MR. BIG lined up softer melodic sense and varied arrangement on the foundation of superb playing technique. While showing technique, the guitar and bass support each other without breaking the flow of the songs. In the wake of the previous album’s success, it is a record on which the band widened its range further. On “Colorado Bulldog,” “Price You Gotta Pay” and “Wild World,” the vocals keep a natural expression in both powerful rock songs and ballads, and the choruses leave a large lingering without becoming excessive. A cover of Cat Stevens’s classic “Wild World” is also included. Songs like “Promise Her the Moon” and “Long Way Down” breathe the band’s full playing too. While having supergroup-like flashiness, they prioritize the ensemble. It is a full record on which each song’s accessibility and the depth of the playing coexist.
