Defying Gravity

『Defying Gravity』は、MR. BIGが持つ高度な演奏力と、すぐに口ずさめるメロディを、無理なく同じ場所へ着地させた作品だ。ポール・ギルバートの鮮烈なギター、ビリー・シーンの自在なベース、エリック・マーティンの温度ある歌、パット・トーピーの安定したリズムが、それぞれの存在感を見せながらも、常にバンドとしてのグルーヴへ戻ってくる。技巧が目立つ場面でも、曲の中心に残るのは歌とコーラスである。 ハードに押し出す曲、ブルージーに揺れる曲、少し肩の力を抜いたポップなロック・ソングが並ぶため、全体には豊かな起伏がある。ギターとベースの掛け合いは機械的な見せ場ではなく、ヴォーカル・ラインを押し上げ、次の展開を呼び込む役割を担う。演奏の巧さを知る人ほど、あえて余白を残すアレンジの上手さに気付くだろう。 本作は、90年代的な華やかさを再現するだけではない。四人が長年にわたり共有してきた呼吸を、今の音像と落ち着いた歌心で鳴らしている。音量を上げればリズム隊のしなやかさとギターの粒立ちが伝わり、繰り返し聴けば各曲のフックが自然な流れの中へ置かれていることが分かる。MR. Defying Gravity brings Mr. Big’s virtuosity and singable melody together with striking ease. Paul Gilbert’s guitar, Billy Sheehan’s bass, Eric Martin’s warm vocal presence and Pat Torpey’s steady pulse each have room to speak, but the songs always return to a shared groove. Even when the playing is flashy, the center remains the vocal line and chorus. Harder material, bluesy shades and lighter pop-rock moments create a varied sequence. Guitar-and-bass exchanges are not detached demonstrations; they lift the singing and open the next section. The record does not simply recreate an earlier era. It captures the lived-in communication of four players who understand when to add color and when to leave space. Defying Gravity is a graceful, melodic statement of what makes Mr. Big distinctive.
