Bump Ahead is an early-1990s work on which MR. BIG lined up softer melodic sense and varied arrangement on the foundation of superb playing technique. While showing technique, the guitar and bass support each other without breaking the flow of the songs. In the wake of the previous album’s success, it is a record on which the band widened its range further.
On “Colorado Bulldog,” “Price You Gotta Pay” and “Wild World,” the vocals keep a natural expression in both powerful rock songs and ballads, and the choruses leave a large lingering without becoming excessive. A cover of Cat Stevens’s classic “Wild World” is also included. Songs like “Promise Her the Moon” and “Long Way Down” breathe the band’s full playing too. While having supergroup-like flashiness, they prioritize the ensemble. It is a full record on which each song’s accessibility and the depth of the playing coexist.
