『Hardwired... to Self-Destruct』は、METALLICAが自らの歴史を見渡しながら、短く爆発するスラッシュの衝動と、長い時間をかけて重さを積み上げる構築力を同時に示した2枚組の第10作だ。プロデュースはグレッグ・フィデルマン。鋭く刻まれるリフ、地を這うようなベース、硬く前へ出るドラム、乾いた張りを持つ歌が、曲ごとに異なる温度で噛み合う。ロバート・トゥルヒーヨが引き続きベースを担っている。 “Hardwired”は1分半の短い爆発で幕を開け、“Moth Into Flame”“Atlas, Rise!”は力強いフックを備える。終曲“Spit Out the Bone”では、猛烈なスラッシュが炸裂する。長尺曲では反復するフレーズとリズムの揺らぎが、陰影の深い空間を作り出す。過去の様式を単に再現するのではなく、現在の演奏感で鳴らした本作は、米ビルボード200で1位を記録した。前作から8年ぶりとなる本作は、ジェイムズ・ヘットフィールドとラーズ・ウルリッヒが主導して書き上げた。大きなコーラスと不穏な展開が、二枚組の中で交互に現れる。経験がもたらす重さと執念を注いだ、長く付き合える作品である。

Hardwired... to Self-Destruct is the tenth album, a two-disc set on which Metallica surveys its own history while showing both the impulse of short, explosive thrash and the constructive power of building weight over long durations. Greg Fidelman produced. Sharply carved riffs, low-crawling bass, hard forward drums and dry, taut singing mesh at different temperatures from song to song. Robert Trujillo continues on bass. "Hardwired" opens with a short, ninety-second explosion, and "Moth Into Flame" and "Atlas, Rise!" carry powerful hooks. The closer "Spit Out the Bone" explodes with furious thrash. On the long songs, repeating phrases and rhythmic sway create a space of deep shading. Playing the past styles not by mere reproduction but with a present sense of performance, the album reached number one on the US Billboard 200. A record to keep company with for a long time, pouring in the weight and tenacity that experience brings.
