The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!

本作『The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!』は、傑作『Dystopia』以降の充実を、さらに力強く押し進めた、MEGADETHらしい切迫感に満ちた一枚だ。デイヴ・ムステインのひねりの効いたリフは、単に速いだけでなく、拍の巧みな置き方や、展開の切り替えによって、常に緊張を生み出している。喉頭がんを克服したムステインの、不屈の闘志が全編にみなぎっている。 冒頭の表題曲“The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!”の劇的な展開、“Life in Hell”の攻撃性、“Night Stalkers”の疾走、そして“Soldier On!”のドラマ性まで、収録曲はいずれも鋭い切れ味を持っている。“Dogs of Chornobyl”のような曲も、バンドの現在の充実を伝えている。 攻撃的な疾走曲から、メロディを生かした場面まで、バンドの卓越した技術と、持ち前の毒気とを、一貫した音像で見事に束ねている点が本作の魅力だ。長い活動歴の中でもなお、スラッシュ・メタルへの尽きせぬ執念が、色濃く刻み込まれている。ベテランとなってなお、その攻撃性が全く衰えていないことを証明した、力強く充実したスラッシュ・メタル作品と言える。

The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead! is a record full of Megadeth’s urgency, powerfully pushing the fullness since the masterpiece Dystopia further. Dave Mustaine’s twisted riffs are not merely fast but always generate tension through the deft placement of beats and shifts of development. The indomitable fighting spirit of Mustaine, who overcame throat cancer, fills the whole. From the dramatic development of the opening title track “The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!” and the aggression of “Life in Hell” to the speed of “Night Stalkers” and the drama of “Soldier On!,” every song has a sharp bite, while a cut like “Dogs of Chornobyl” conveys the band’s present fullness. Its appeal is beautifully binding the band’s outstanding technique and native venom in a consistent sound, from aggressive dashing songs to melody-rich passages. Even within a long career, an inexhaustible obsession with thrash metal is strongly inscribed. Proving that, even as veterans, its aggression has not dimmed at all, it is a powerful, fulfilling thrash-metal record.
