Super Collider

『Super Collider』は、MEGADETHが切れ味のあるギターを核にしながらも、ミドルテンポのグルーヴや、歌メロの比重を大きく高めた変化作だ。従来のスラッシュ的な張り詰めた緊張とは異なり、曲はより開かれた、ハード・ロックの手触りで進んでいく。攻撃性一辺倒ではない、MEGADETHの別の側面を聴かせる一枚である。 冒頭“Kingmaker”の力強い推進力、キャッチーな表題曲“Super Collider”、“Built for War”の攻撃性、そしてカントリー的な要素も見せる“The Blackest Crow”まで、収録曲は幅広い表情を見せている。“Dance in the Rain”のような曲も、バンドの新しい試みを伝えている。シン・リジィの“Cold Sweat”のカヴァーも収録されている。 それでも、リフのひねりや、リード・ギターの個性は随所に残っており、バンドらしい鋭い輪郭を、決して失ってはいない。よりメロディックで、聴きやすい方向性を追求した、実験的な側面を持つ作品だ。“Off the Edge”“Forget to Remember”のような曲でも、切れ味あるギターと歌メロが結び付いている。賛否は分かれるものの、ベテラン・バンドが安住を避け、新たな表現を探ろうとした、興味深い一枚と言える。

Super Collider is a record of change on which Megadeth, while keeping sharp guitar at its core, greatly raises the weight of mid-tempo groove and vocal melody. Unlike its former taut thrash tension, the songs proceed with a more open, hard-rock feel. It is a record that presents another side of Megadeth, not all-aggression. From the powerful drive of the opener “Kingmaker” and the catchy title track “Super Collider” to the aggression of “Built for War” and “The Blackest Crow,” which even shows country elements, the songs show wide-ranging faces, while a cut like “Dance in the Rain” conveys the band’s new attempts. A cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Cold Sweat” is also included. Even so, the twist of the riffs and the character of the lead guitar remain throughout, never losing the band’s sharp outline. Pursuing a more melodic, accessible direction, it is a work with an experimental side. Though views are divided, on which a veteran band avoided complacency to seek new expression, it is an intriguing record.
