『Risk』は、MEGADETHが従来のスラッシュ的な鋭さをあえて大きく後退させ、より滑らかなメロディ、ミドルテンポのグルーヴ、そしてポップな曲構成へと大胆に近づいた、極めて異色の作品だ。その名の通り、大きなリスクを冒したこの音楽性の変化は、当時ファンの間で大きな議論を呼んだ。緊張感のあるギターや、皮肉な声の個性は残りつつも、曲全体の肌触りは、明らかにこれまでと異なっている。 ダンサブルな“Crush 'Em”、内省的な“Insomnia”、そして“Breadline”のメロディまで、収録曲はメロディックで開かれたロックの感触を前面に押し出している。“Prince of Darkness”“Wanderlust”のような曲も、多彩な実験性を示している。 変化の大きさゆえに賛否を大きく招いた作品だが、バンドが自らの定型をあえて外し、全く別の表情を探そうとした、その挑戦的な姿勢は確かに伝わってくる。マーティ・フリードマンが参加した最後の作品としても知られる。“The Doctor Is Calling”“Ecstasy”のような曲でも、滑らかなメロディとグルーヴが結び付いている。従来の作風とは大きく異なる、大胆な実験が全編を貫いている。ヘヴィネスだけでは測れない、実験性と過渡期ならではの魅力を持つ、興味深い一枚と言える。

Risk is an extremely unusual work on which Megadeth deliberately pulls back its former thrash sharpness greatly and boldly draws closer to smoother melody, mid-tempo groove and pop construction. True to its name, this risk-taking change of musicality drew great debate among fans at the time. The tension of the guitar and the ironic character of the voice remain, yet the overall feel of the songs clearly differs from before. From the danceable “Crush ’Em” and the introspective “Insomnia” to the melody of “Breadline,” the songs foreground a melodic, open rock feel, while cuts like “Prince of Darkness” and “Wanderlust” show varied experiment. Though it drew strongly mixed views for the scale of the change, the challenging stance of a band deliberately leaving its own template to seek an entirely different face surely comes through. It is also known as the last work to feature Marty Friedman. Holding an experiment and appeal particular to a transitional period, not measurable by heaviness alone, it is an intriguing record.
