Countdown to Extinction

『Countdown to Extinction』は、MEGADETHが前作『Rust in Peace』の複雑怪奇なスラッシュ感を少し整理し、太いリフ、明快なサビ、そして重いグルーヴを前面に押し出した第5作だ。デイヴ・ムステインのギターと声は、持ち前の鋭さを保ちながらも、曲はより大きな会場にも届く、力強い構造を持っている。バンド最大の商業的成功を収めた代表作である。 “Symphony of Destruction”の重厚なリフや、“Sweating Bullets”の不穏なフックのように、キャッチーな親しみやすさと、社会を斬る鋭い言葉とが、同じ場所に共存している。“Skin o' My Teeth”の疾走、“Foreclosure of a Dream”の緊張感、そして環境問題を扱った表題曲“Countdown to Extinction”まで、収録曲はいずれも完成度が高い。 スラッシュ・メタルの攻撃性を全く失うことなく、ソングライティングの射程を大きく広げた点に、本作の大きな意義がある。技巧に走りすぎず、楽曲そのものの強さで勝負している。複雑さと分かりやすさを高い次元で両立させた、90年代のMEGADETHを代表する、力強く洗練された名盤と言える。

Countdown to Extinction is the fifth album on which Megadeth slightly organizes the bizarrely complex thrash of the previous Rust in Peace and pushes thick riffs, clear choruses and heavy groove to the front. Dave Mustaine’s guitar and voice keep their native sharpness, yet the songs have a powerful structure that reaches larger venues too. A signature work that achieved the band’s greatest commercial success. As in the weighty riff of “Symphony of Destruction” and the uneasy hook of “Sweating Bullets,” catchy accessibility and sharp words cutting at society coexist in the same place, while from the speed of “Skin o’ My Teeth” and the tension of “Foreclosure of a Dream” to the title track “Countdown to Extinction,” treating environmental issues, every song is highly polished. Its great significance lies in greatly widening the range of songwriting without losing thrash aggression at all. Not overrunning into technique, it wins on the strength of the songs themselves. Uniting complexity and clarity at a high level, it is a powerful, refined masterpiece representative of 1990s Megadeth.
