Novum Initium

『Novum Initium』は、MASTERPLANが太いギター・リフ、クラシカルなキーボード、ドラマティックなコーラスを組み合わせ、正統派メロディック・メタルを力強く鳴らした第5作だ。ラテン語で「新たな始まり」を意味するタイトルどおり、ヨルン・ランデに代わってアット・ヴァンスのリック・アルツィ、ベースにヤリ・カイヌライネン(元ストラトヴァリウス)、ドラムにクレイドル・オヴ・フィルスのマルティン・スカロウプカを迎えた。2013年にAFMから発表された。 曲は重心を低く保ちながら、サビでは大きく空へ開く。序奏“Per Aspera Ad Astra”から“The Game”の疾走、シングル“Keep Your Dream Alive”のフック、“Black Night of Magic”や“Return from Avalon”の陰影、そして10分を超える表題曲まで密度が高い。表題曲ではグラポウ自身も歌に加わっている。過去をなぞるだけではなく、バンドの新たな推進力を示すような勢いがある。アルツィの声はランデに通じる質感を持ちつつ独自の色も備え、無理なく作品に馴染む。重厚さと歌メロの華やかさを両立した、堂々たる一枚だ。

Novum Initium is the fifth album, combining thick guitar riffs, classical keyboards and dramatic choruses to play orthodox melodic metal with force. True to the title, Latin for “new beginning,” At Vance's Rick Altzi replaced Jørn Lande, with Jari Kainulainen (ex-Stratovarius) on bass and Cradle of Filth's Martin Skaroupka on drums. Released on AFM in 2013. The songs keep a low center of gravity, then open wide to the sky in the choruses. From the intro “Per Aspera Ad Astra,” the racing “The Game,” the hook of the single “Keep Your Dream Alive,” the shadow of “Black Night of Magic” and “Return from Avalon,” to the title track running past ten minutes, the density is high. Grapow himself joins on vocals on the title track. Rather than tracing the past, there's momentum that shows the band's new drive. Altzi's voice has a texture akin to Lande's while carrying its own color, fitting the album easily — a stately record balancing heft and melodic flash.
