Time to Be King

『Time to Be King』は、MASTERPLANが厚いギター、シンフォニックな鍵盤、壮大なコーラスを重ねたドラマティックなパワー・メタル作だ。2010年5月にAFMから発表された本作では、2009年にヨルン・ランデがヴォーカルに復帰。彼が全ての歌詞を書き、アクセル・マッケンロットも主要な作曲者として表題曲や“Blue Europa”の原型を持ち込んだ。マイク・テラーナがドラムを叩き、ヤン・S・エッカートがベースを支え、グラポウがプロデュースを手がけている。 曲は堂々としたミドルテンポから疾走曲まで幅を持ち、重さとメロディの釣り合いがよく取れている。冒頭の“Fiddle of Time”の推進力、先行シングル“Far from the End of the World”、力強い“The Black One”、第二次大戦後の欧州を描いた“Blue Europa”、バラード的な“Under the Moon”や“The Dark Road”まで、大仰なアレンジの中で歌のフックをしっかり中心に置く構成が魅力だ。過去作より生々しく、複雑さを削いだ音作りも印象的である。結果的にランデ在籍最後の作品となった、力のこもった一枚だ。

Time to Be King is a dramatic power metal record layering thick guitar, symphonic keyboards and grand choruses. On this May 2010 AFM release, Jørn Lande returned on vocals in 2009. He wrote all the lyrics, and Axel Mackenrott, as a main songwriter, brought the seeds of the title track and “Blue Europa.” Mike Terrana plays drums, Jan S. Eckert anchors the bass, and Grapow handled production. The songs range from stately mid-tempo to racers, with weight and melody well balanced. From the drive of the opener “Fiddle of Time,” the advance single “Far from the End of the World,” the forceful “The Black One,” and “Blue Europa” (which depicts post-WWII Europe), to the ballad-leaning “Under the Moon” and “The Dark Road,” the appeal is a structure that keeps the vocal hook firmly at the center amid grand arrangements. The rawer, less complex production is also striking. It became Lande's final album with the band — a record made with real conviction.
