PumpKings

『PumpKings』は、ローランド・グラポウがヘロウィン在籍時に書いた楽曲を、MASTERPLANの現体制で全曲録り直した特別な作品だ。1990年から2000年にかけて書かれた11曲は、『Pink Bubbles Go Ape』『Chameleon』『Master of the Rings』『The Time of the Oath』『The Dark Ride』の5作に原曲がある。2017年7月にAFMから発表された。タイトルはヘロウィンのカボチャを踏まえた洒落である。 過去の素材をなぞるだけではなく、録音時点の声、音圧、アレンジ感覚で照らし直すことで、MASTERPLANの変化を確認できる。テンポやキーの違い以上に、コーラスの重ね方、ギターの距離感、リズムの沈み込みに現在のバンド像が出ている。リック・アルツィの歌と、2016年に加入したケヴィン・コットのドラムも新鮮だ。元の楽曲を知っている場合は、懐かしさだけでなく、どこを強調し直しているかに注目したい。同年のヘロウィンの再結成ツアーとの時期の重なりは偶然だとグラポウは語っている。彼が自分の歴史をどう整理しているかを読むための、ファンには興味深い一枚である。

PumpKings is a special record on which Roland Grapow re-recorded, with Masterplan's then-current lineup, the songs he wrote during his time in Helloween. The eleven tracks, written between 1990 and 2000, have their originals on five albums: Pink Bubbles Go Ape, Chameleon, Master of the Rings, The Time of the Oath and The Dark Ride. Released on AFM in July 2017. The title is a pun on Helloween's pumpkin. Rather than merely tracing the old material, re-illuminating it with the voice, sonic weight and arrangement sense of the recording moment lets you register how Masterplan has changed. More than differences of tempo or key, the current band shows in how choruses are layered, how far back the guitar sits, and how the rhythm settles. Rick Altzi's singing and the drums of Kevin Kott, who joined in 2016, are fresh too. If you know the originals, look for what's been re-emphasized, not just nostalgia. Grapow says the overlap with Helloween's reunion tour that year was coincidence — an intriguing record for reading how he sorts through his own history.
