『Dragon's Kiss』は、MARTY FRIEDMANが、ネオクラシカルで華麗な速弾きだけでなく、東洋的で独特な響きや、深い歌心のある旋律を、ギターで鮮やかに描いた、記念すべきソロ・デビュー作だ。ジェイソン・ベッカーとのカコフォニーでの活動と並行して、シュラプネル・レコードから発表された本作は、その卓越した技巧で、80年代のギター・シーンに、鮮烈な衝撃を与えた一枚である。演奏の技巧は、実に華やかだが、その一つ一つのフレーズには、彼ならではの、独特で強い感情が、しっかりと宿っている。 冒頭を飾る、疾走する“Saturation Point”の力強さ、そして“Dragon Mistress”のドラマ性、さらに“Evil Thrill”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Forbidden City”、そして、早くも日本的な情緒を感じさせる“Namida (Tears)”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。マーティ・フリードマンならではの、あのエキゾチックな音階感覚が、すでに全開となっている。 楽曲は、決して、ギターの見せ場を、ただ連ねるだけではなく、確かな緊張と、解放との、その豊かな流れを持っている一枚だ。イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンらとは、また異なる、独自の音楽的個性が、鮮明に打ち出されている。後の、彼の作風を決定づける、鋭くも、表情豊かなソロ・デビュー作と言える。稀代のギタリストの原点がここにある。

Dragon's Kiss is a memorable solo debut on which Marty Friedman vividly drew, with guitar, not only neoclassical, gorgeous fast picking but Eastern, distinctive resonance and deeply song-minded melody. Released on Shrapnel Records in parallel with his work in Cacophony with Jason Becker, it gave a vivid shock to the 1980s guitar scene with its outstanding technique. The playing’s technique is truly gorgeous, yet in each of its phrases a distinctive, strong emotion particular to him firmly resides. From the power of the speeding opener “Saturation Point” and the drama of “Dragon Mistress” to a cut like “Evil Thrill,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Forbidden City” and “Namida (Tears),” evoking Japanese sentiment even this early, convey the work’s fullness. His own exotic scale sense is already in full bloom. A record on which the songs, by no means merely stringing together guitar showcases, have a rich flow of sure tension and release. A musical character distinct from the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen is vividly set forth. A sharp yet expressive solo debut that defined his later style — the origin of an unmatched guitarist here.
