Under Fire

『Under Fire』は、LIONSHEARTが力強いヴォーカル、厚みのあるギター、明快なコーラスをまとめた1998年3月発表の第3作だ。楽曲は正統派の骨格を持ちながら、歌メロには英国らしい哀感がにじむ。もっとも本作は、完成から発売まで3年を要している。レコード会社との法廷闘争が続いたためだ。 ギターにはタイケットのブルック・セント・ジェイムズが加わり、グレアム・コレットとマイケル・オブライエンが脇を固めた。派手な技巧よりも、曲の熱量とバンドの一体感で聴かせる。冒頭の“Lonely Tonight”から表題曲まで全11曲、骨太で歌えるハード・ロックを求める人に勧めたい内容だ。だが3年の空白は致命的で、売り上げはまったく振るわなかった。時計の針は、彼らを置いて進んでしまっていた。バンドはここで一度解散し、グリメットはプライドを結成する。日本盤には“Lost in Tokyo”が追加された。皮肉にも、その題名が示す国こそ彼らを最後まで支えた場所だった。1993年の来日公演は、のちに実況盤『Rising Sons – Live in Japan 1993』として世に出た。グリム・リーパー時代の曲も混ざる、楽しい一夜の記録である。

Under Fire, released in March 1998, is the third album, gathering powerful vocals, thick guitar and clear choruses. The songs have an orthodox frame while a British melancholy seeps into the vocal lines. This one, though, took three years to get from finished to released: the legal battles with the record company dragged on. Tyketto's guitarist Brooke St. James came in, with Graham Collett and Michael O'Brien alongside. It plays on the heat of the songs and the band's unity rather than on flashy technique. From the opening “Lonely Tonight” to the title track, eleven songs to recommend to anyone after hard rock with muscle you can sing. But the three-year gap was fatal and sales did not move at all; the clock had gone on without them. The band folded here and Grimmett founded Pride. The Japanese edition adds “Lost in Tokyo” — ironically enough, the country in that title was the place that supported them to the last. Their 1993 Japanese shows later surfaced as the live album Rising Sons – Live in Japan 1993, a cheerful record of one night with some Grim Reaper songs mixed in.
