Pride in Tact

『Pride in Tact』は、スティーヴ・グリメットの強靭な歌声を中心に、LIONSHEARTが英国メロディック・メタルの正統派らしいドラマを鳴らした1994年11月発表の第2作だ。太いギターと鍵盤の支えがサビを大きく押し上げ、技巧を見せる場面でも最終的にはメロディの明快さへ戻ってくる。力強いリフ、伸びるヴォーカル、厚い和声の配置に、伝統的なメタルへの信頼が表れている。 冒頭の“Déjà Vu”から“I'll Stand Up”へ、そして“Gods of War”“Stronger Than Steel”まで全12曲。前作でマーク・オワーズが担った役割を、ニック・バーは十分に引き継いでみせた。派手さだけに頼らず、歌とリフの強さで勝負するため、時代の流行を越えて楽しめる硬派なメロディック・メタルになっている。そして本作は日本で10万枚を超えた。グランジ全盛の時代にこの音を貫いた彼らを、最も強く支持したのは日本の聴き手だった。日本盤には“Love Won't Bring Me Down”が追加されている。AORに寄ったバラードから硬いブルース・ロックまで、前作より振れ幅を広げた一枚でもあり、バンドの最高傑作に挙げる声も多い。

Pride in Tact, released in November 1994, is the second album, on which Lionsheart sounded the drama of properly British melodic metal around Steve Grimmett's resilient voice. Thick guitar and keyboard support lift the choruses wide, and even where technique shows, the songs return finally to melodic clarity. The placement of powerful riffs, a soaring vocal and dense harmony shows a trust in traditional metal. From the opening “Déjà Vu” into “I'll Stand Up,” and on to “Gods of War” and “Stronger Than Steel,” there are twelve songs. Nick Burr proved fully equal to the role Mark Owers had held on the debut. Because it competes on the strength of song and riff rather than flash alone, it became hard-edged melodic metal that outlives the fashions of its moment. And it sold over 100,000 copies in Japan. In the age of grunge, the listeners who backed them hardest for holding this line were Japanese. The Japanese edition adds “Love Won't Bring Me Down.” It also widens the range of the debut, from AOR-leaning balladry to harder blues rock, and many name it the band's best.
