Abyss

『Abyss』は、LIONSHEARTが再結成して自費で作り上げた2004年発表の第4作にして、現時点での最後のアルバムだ。録音は2003年5月から6月、オックスフォードのウェアハウス・スタジオ。プロデュースはスティーヴ・ワトキンス。生々しくも繊細な音像が、バンドのメロディをよく捉えている。グリメットの歌とイアン・ナッシュのギターが前面に立ち、作品はほぼその二人を軸に回る。 “Screaming”“Nightmare”“I'm Alive”“Abyss”は速めのメロディック・ハード、“I Need Love”“If You Cut Me”はバラード。“Save Me”のブルージーな中速はホワイトスネイク的だと評された。全12曲。完成後も一年近く、まともなレーベルが付くのを待たねばならなかった。北米はメタレッジ、その他の地域はフロンティアーズから出ている。日本盤には“Only When I Sleep”が追加された。なおグリメットは2017年1月、エクアドルで右脚膝下に重い感染症を負い、切断を余儀なくされた。それでも4月には義足で歩き始め、7月には車椅子で舞台に戻っている。2022年8月15日、62歳で世を去った。

Abyss, released in 2004, is the fourth album — self-financed after the band reformed — and their last to date. It was recorded in May and June 2003 at the Warehouse Studio in Oxford, produced by Steve Watkins, whose raw but sensitive picture catches the band's melody well. Grimmett's voice and Ian Nash's guitar stand at the front, and the record turns almost entirely on the two of them. “Screaming,” “Nightmare,” “I'm Alive” and “Abyss” are the faster melodic hard rockers; “I Need Love” and “If You Cut Me” are ballads. The bluesy mid-tempo of “Save Me” was likened to Whitesnake. Twelve songs. Even once finished it had to wait nearly a year for a serious label to take it on. North America got it through Metaledge, the rest of the world through Frontiers. The Japanese edition adds “Only When I Sleep.” Grimmett, incidentally, lost his right leg below the knee in January 2017 to an aggressive infection contracted in Ecuador; by April he was walking on a prosthetic, and in July he was back on stage in a wheelchair. He died on 15 August 2022, aged 62.
