Determinus

『Determinus』は、LEVERAGEが10年の空白を破り、北欧メロディック・メタルの力強さとハード・ロック的な歌心を再び前面に出した2019年4月26日発表の復帰作だ。2018年の配信EP『The Devil's Turn』で始まった再始動には二人の新顔がいた。ギターのミッコ・サロヴァーラ(元キウアス)と、歌のキンモ・ブロム。デビュー作の下敷きとなったデモで本来歌うはずだった、あのブロムである。ヘイッキネンはこれを円環が閉じたと語った。 先行曲“Red Moon Over Sonora”を経て、“Wind of Morrigan”ではロッタ=マリア・ヘイスカネンのヴァイオリンがフォークの陰影を添え、ビデオにもなった。7分を超える“Burn Love Burn”と“Heaven's No Place for Us”が示すとおり、曲は大きなコーラスを持ちながらリフには厚みと陰りがある。“Tiger”や“Mephistocrate”では直球のヘヴィ・メタルへ振れ、“Rollerball”“Troy”が締める。プロデュースはヘイッキネン、ミックスはエーロ・カウコミエス、マスタリングはスヴァンテ・フォシュベック。日本盤には“Wind of Morrigan”のアコースティック版が加わる。待たれた再始動にふさわしい、堂々たる一枚だ。

Determinus is the 2019 comeback, released on 26 April, on which Leverage broke a ten-year silence and put Nordic melodic metal's power and hard rock's melodic feeling back up front. The return, begun with the 2018 digital EP The Devil's Turn, brought two new faces: guitarist Mikko Salovaara (ex-Kiuas) and singer Kimmo Blom — the same Blom who was meant to sing on the demos behind the debut. Heikkinen called it a circle closing. After the advance track “Red Moon Over Sonora,” “Wind of Morrigan” adds folk shading through Lotta-Maria Heiskanen's violin and became a video. As “Burn Love Burn” and “Heaven's No Place for Us” show at over seven minutes each, the songs carry big choruses while the riffs keep weight and shadow. “Tiger” and “Mephistocrate” swing toward straight heavy metal, and “Rollerball” and “Troy” close it out. Heikkinen produced, Eero Kaukomies mixed, Svante Forsbäck mastered. The Japanese edition adds an acoustic “Wind of Morrigan.” A commanding record, worthy of the wait.
