Above the Beyond

『Above the Beyond』は、LEVERAGEが北欧メロディック・メタルの透明感と太いハード・ロックのリフを丁寧に共存させた2021年10月15日発表の第5作だ。フロンティアーズから、前作と同じ六人編成のまま届けられた。全9曲と最も短く、その分だけ密度が高い。ミッコ・サロヴァーラとトゥオマス・ヘイッキネンのツイン・ギターは技巧を誇示せず曲の必要な分だけを弾き、叙情的なフレーズと重厚なアンサンブルの間に自然な呼吸を作る。 冒頭の“Starlight”、ビデオの作られた“Emperor”、そして“Angelica”では、キンモ・ブロムの声がパワー・メタル的な伸びと、翳りのある語り口の間を行き来する。“Into the New World”や“Do You Love Me Now”が開放的なサビを持つ一方、“Under His Eye”“Galleria”には緊張感が残り、静かな“Silence”で幕が下りる。7曲目“Falling Out of Grace”はメンニ・レヴォンコルピに着想を得た曲だ。単なる爽快系には収まらない、成熟した北欧ハード/メタル作品である。この時期ブロムは病と闘いながら歌い続けており、2022年8月に世を去った。結果として、これが彼の最後のスタジオ作となっている。

Above the Beyond is the fifth album, released on 15 October 2021, on which Leverage carefully let Nordic melodic metal's clarity coexist with thick hard rock riffs. Frontiers issued it with the same six-piece as before. At nine songs it is their shortest, and denser for it. The twin guitars of Mikko Salovaara and Tuomas Heikkinen play only what each song needs rather than showing off, breathing naturally between lyrical phrases and heavy ensemble work. On the opening “Starlight,” on “Emperor,” which got a video, and on “Angelica,” Kimmo Blom's voice moves between power metal reach and a shadowed delivery. “Into the New World” and “Do You Love Me Now” carry open choruses, while “Under His Eye” and “Galleria” keep their tension, and the quiet “Silence” lowers the curtain. Track seven, “Falling Out of Grace,” was inspired by Menni Revonkorpi. A mature Nordic hard rock record that never settles for mere exhilaration. Blom sang through illness during this period and died in August 2022; this became his last studio album.
