『Unmasked』は、KISSがハード・ロックの骨格を残しながら、軽快なリズム、明るいコーラス、磨かれたポップ感覚へと踏み込んだ第8作だ。ポール・スタンレー、ジーン・シモンズ、エース・フレーリーの異なる歌声が、アルバムに多彩な色を与えている。 “Shandi”の柔らかなメロディ、“Talk to Me”のギター・ポップ、“Tomorrow”の爽快さ、そして“Is That You?”の勢いが、この時期ならではの親しみやすさを伝える。従来の荒々しさとは違う角度から、KISSのフック作りの巧さを味わえる作品だ。 親しみやすいメロディとコンパクトな曲作りを前面に置きながらも、ギターの押し出しとリズムの切れ味がロックの芯をしっかり保っている。イントロからサビまでの距離が近く、次々にフックが現れるため、華やかな表面の奥にも手堅いバンド演奏の熱が残る。“Two Sides of the Coin”“Torpedo Girl”のような曲では、遊び心のあるアレンジとキャッチーなメロディが同居し、この時期ならではの軽やかさを楽しめる。荒々しさを抑えたことで、KISSが本来持っていた優れたメロディ・センスが、かえってはっきりと浮かび上がっている。時代の空気を取り込んだ、明るく風通しのよい一枚だ。ポップへ大きく舵を切った過渡期の一枚として、独特の輝きを放つ充実作である。

Unmasked keeps hard rock’s frame while stepping into light rhythms, bright choruses and a polished pop sensibility on KISS’s eighth album. The differing voices of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley give the record a varied palette. The gentle melody of “Shandi,” the guitar-pop of “Talk to Me,” the breeziness of “Tomorrow” and the drive of “Is That You?” convey an accessibility particular to this period, letting you enjoy KISS’s skill at crafting hooks from an angle different from the old rawness. Foregrounding approachable melody and compact writing, it still holds a rock core firmly through the push of the guitars and the bite of the rhythm. With the distance from intro to chorus kept short and hook after hook appearing, the heat of a solid band performance remains beneath the bright surface — a fulfilling transitional record that gives off its own distinctive shine after a big turn toward pop.
